I HAVE ACQUIRED ANOTHER INSTRUMENT… temporarily. Chromatic mountain dulcimer—borrowed it from one of the guys I jam with, who has no idea how to play it either, tuned it and put a couple new strings on. IN WHICH I RUSH THROUGH WHITEWATER ABOUT 20% FASTER THAN I REALLY HAVE ANY RIGHT TO BE PLAYING IT. WHOOOSH. I am having fun, though, and I did okay beyond the one bit in the middle, BUT THAT WAS A REPEAT ANYWAY SO FUCK IT. Note to self: don’t play banjo in lipstick ever again ever, it just makes the weird things you do with your mouth a million times worse. ALSO WHY IS YOUR ELBOW DOING THAT THERE IS NO NEED FOR YOUR ELBOW TO BE DOING THAT.

Not sure if it’s entirely clear from this video, but I’ve been practicing a ton lately. Movementandlocation said something offhand about that 10,000 hours rule and how practicing for five hours every day for five years would be enough to be an ~*expert~*, and I was like HEY, I SHOULD TOTALLY PRACTICE FOR FIVE HOURS EVERY DAY (despite kind of sideeyeing the dude who wrote that book, whatevs). I am not entirely sure what I was thinking, but it’s been going surprisingly well—my average since I started keeping track at the beginning of the month is four/day, but I’m still really pleased with that. My classes are admittedly kind of suffering, whoops. AM TRYING FOR BALANCE, but it’s increasingly clear that music is one of the few things I’m actually willing to put consistent hard work into, and I want to take advantage of that while it lasts.

I think all of my friends are sort of wondering what the fuck is going on because all I ever talk about is this weird obscure hobby that I really wasn’t serious about for the longest time (i.e. up until about this time last year), and I’m not entirely sure either, but it is what it is, I guess! The more I improve the more I am aware of all the stuff I still need to learn to actually do the sort of things I want to do with music (which is always how it is, alas), but it’s been less discouraging than that sort of thing usually is because I can tell that I’m making steady, consistent progress towards that goal, and I’m still constantly delighted each time I pick up the banjo and realize that I’m comfortable doing something that I used to struggle with.

That hand on the shoulder? Totally not a friendly gesture. I mean, at this point, the friendliest words that Tony and Cap are said to each other are “Captain” and “Mr. Stark” respectively.
